Do you know... What started the concept of restaurant stoves in the home kitchen?

Approximately 20 years ago, while working in the restaurant equipment business outfitting and designing commercial kitchens, I identified an historic moment.

I give credit for the whole idea of putting a commercial stove in the home to a set designer in Hollywood working on the TV sitcom "Family Ties", starring Michael J. Fox. If you remember, the kitchen set contained a large stainless steel commercial stove. Actually, it was a 60" wide double oven range with a raised griddle broiler, made by the US Range CoTM. This was America's first chance to even think about the idea of a restaurant stove in the home. Knowing a person that worked for US Range, I can tell you that they were flooded with calls about the TV show's stove.

Because of this instant national exposure, my business along with all restaurant supply companies started selling many commercial ranges into homes. (This practice was allowed for years until the building codes, insurance companies, and inspectors got wise to the potential hazard of a true restaurant stove installed next to wood cabinets and under weak or absent hoods, but the ball was rolling.)

Soon, a now well-known company took advantage of the growing phenomenon and decided to design a home version of a restaurant stove. Soon many companies followed. A chain of events initiated by this before mentioned company, spun off other companies, some brand new and others that altered their restaurant stoves to pass the rigorous certification testing needed for home products.

Now the consumer has many choices, but regardless of what you've been told, they are not all the same. Cooking benefits are the real reason to install these products in your home, not easy cleaning and NOT STATUS. You'll be the envy of the neighborhood because of the great meals you'll make, not because you have the most stainless steel.
